All graduated and stuff - what do I do with my life now?

Photo taken last weekend after dinner in Dallas - 5 internet points if you can figure out where

So I graduated last weekend. It feels a bit weird. I've been in college for about eight years now - five years at my first university doing CS and pure math then sculpture, working for a dotcom for a year, then transferring to another university for 3 years and getting a degree in video game development.

I've worked full time before, so that's not weird. What is weird is the feeling that I don't have to eventually start taking classes ever again. That I actually did finish college. I'm very good at the academic side of things, just not very good at sticking to one thing and finishing it.

I'm going to shoot for a job doing level design, hopefully I'll find a good one, as there are quite a few big video game development companies around here, and even more in Austin. If not Texas, there's always California. I like Texas, but I wouldn't be against moving, especially if it's a good company.

It's actually a fairly good time to be a video game development-type person fresh out of college - the industry is laying off a fair amount of senior dev people, but they're hiring far more fresh out of college types on average than they have been the last five years or so. People seek entertainment in a depression, apparently.

It would certainly be nice not to have to be hobbled by living on only a single income - money is always tight, and I miss when both of us worked for the dotcom and we had boatloads of it for that one short year. Lesson learned though, don't put all your eggs in one basket and don't work for dotcoms. And a college degree is actually pretty mandatory for getting a decent job. There's almost a glass ceiling if you don't have one.

Anyway, enough rambling. We'll see what the future brings. Hopefully not Skynet heh.

Thanks! Yeah, we'll see, Texas is nice, but the weather is a bit rough at times (I like the heat, but 114 degrees F on a regular basis during the summer is a bit much for even me). Any particular advice on job hunting in the technical / creative job area?

for games, I'd hit up gamasutra.com, E3, and game developer's conference. Comic Con is also a good place to network. Be prepared to do tests.

usually for game companies, they give you a test. For level design, it is usually build a level with specific requirements.

Phew! and here I was worried it'd be something hard like multi-variable calculus lol!

Level design is something I'm fairly confident that I could do to any standard or requirements with one arm tied behind my back :D

Was the subject Photoshoped into the background?

Additionally, in my case, I don't think a degree would matter. I would have to move to the far ends of the earth and even then, it still wouldn't have guaranteed me a job or a livable income (not that I have one now.) I have certain goals I'm chasing, but the bigger ones have been put on hold until there is funding available. :(

Nope! The next arch of neon was blue, that's why it contrasts so nicely :D

Aside from resizing, it's straight from the camera :D

You would think a degree wouldn't matter, but in many occupations, it does. Not all mind you, but in any of the technical ones I'd pursue, a degree is a nearly universal requirement.

And often it will limit the jobs you can get, in a sort of glass ceiling fashion.

It certainly doesn't guarantee a job or particular income, but I've been on the job market without one more than a few times this last decade, and it's not something I'd wish to be without if at all possible.

Well, now you can tell us how it's like to be in the job market with a degree.

Ok. He's done interviews and he's gone through it so:

1) what's your degree, where'd you get it from.

2)Interviews are tough. Like SAT prepardness for EA interviews. The more you know about a variety of game console subjects, the better. Things like memory management, pipelines, multiprocessing, graphics (the more, the better). Be prepared for a really tough exam and a tough interview. It's always a plus if you're a gamer and know the games from that studio.

3) Internships are really good. Too late, tho, right? If you can't get into gaming, get something that will give you experience toward gaming jobs.

Any specific questions? This is your generic advice. If you have a specific company, some of the EA guys have come from other game companies and he can ask around. If you want, he can probably get you an interview in LA or San Fran. He might even be your first interview.
Are you going in as a programmer or an artist?

Congrats on graduating. It doesn't matter that it took you that long to finish, but the fact that you indeed did finish!

Are you in the Dallas area? That's were I am from, and coming back to Sunday for 3 weeks. The background looks familiar, yet there are plenty of places that could possibly look like that.

And you do realize that IF you work for EA, I'll be calling you personally when shit don't work.
I used to just write scathing emails to the developers. Heh, now I know who they are and have their home numbers.
