Wrecks are definitely sobering...and for me, that sober moments lasts about a week or two and then I'm back to being me again. I'm not reckless per se, just a tad speedy. Like you, I pushed my limit and found it at 140 mph, got scared and slowed down and since that, I tend to stay under 90 with the occasional 100.
I've never been to Texas though, Illinois drivers are pretty good actually.
