The Cynical Generation

You know why we're cynical? Because we watched the baby boomers, hippies and all of these people who were going to 'change the world' turn into the very thing they said they despised.

We've seen how it turns out. Today's student rioter is twenty or thirty years away from becoming the oppressor they so valiantly decried.

Wouldn't you become cynical too?

I need a better quote:

“At twenty a man is full of fight and hope. He wants to reform the world. When he is seventy he still wants to reform the world, but he knows he can't.” - Darrow

Very true. I don't think there has been a more optimistic generation than the baby boomers since at least WWI.

Damn straight! The "greatest generation" went on a power trip about saving the world and shit and made life kind of hellish for the boomers who rebelled until they got a slice of the pie and decided that "we had our fun, so fuck the rest of you."

&& we watched our parents and/or our friends' parents all get divorced, and if they didn't get divorced, they stopped loving each other and only stayed together for the kids, because they were college students during "free love."

I remember being in elementary school and telling my parents they should get divorced because so many of my classmates had divorced parents and I felt left out.

wow lol

yeah, growing up, divorce was the norm, so I didn't think I'd last long being married. Happily surprised to find I was very wrong :)

hope you don't mind that I'm commenting on another comment? lol but I was just wondering, how long have you been married?

I'm at the stage where I'm thinking about it, and like you.. I haven't had many good examples to go by. my parents have been divorced since I was 2, so that does make me kind of nervous.

4 years :)

A lot of it has to do with asking one's self "Is this a person I could spend the rest of my life around?"

A lot of people don't consider that, I fear. The few relationships among my peers I've seen go bad were people who genuinely couldn't function together in a stable fashion in the long term. They loved each other, sure, but... If you can't function around someone for periods of time, or just get along with, probably not a good idea to marry them.

You're probably right about that.

If you don't mind my asking, how long did you date before you got married? We're going on 5 years this August.

About 2 years, as I recall.

There's another thought, that the boomers didn't become what they despised. They became what they hoped to become. It's just that they didn't really think through the details of what that would be.

I do agree, though, that they destroyed everything. Everything!

You know, those few hippies still running around with their scrap of grey ponytails (consisting of the fringe highlighting their bald heads) can't afford their blood pressure meds and whatnot. They're true to their beliefs--which is get high and be a bum, but that's not something to be proud of or emulate.

That's why I never had interest in changing the world. I just want to have fun. I don't give 2 shits about the world.
